The Islam And The Muslim Community - 1651 Words
The Islam faith grew stronger and united during the lifetime of the Prophet Mohammed. Soon after his death, differences regarding leadership of the Muslim community instigated conflict. By the year 650 AD, the Islamic community had divided into two main branches, the Shia and the Sunnis. Similar beliefs and practices among both sects have allowed for their members to co-exist for centuries. However, differences in theology, law, and religious organizations have caused drastic conflict and competition among the two, dividing and tearing communities apart. With approximately eighty-five percent, Sunnis are the majority of the Muslim population. They see their branch of Islam as traditionalist and orthodox. The Qurââ¬â¢an and traditions, orâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Shia accounts only to fifteen percent of the Muslim population with its vast majority residing in Iran and Iraq. They claim that the Prophet Mohammed had appointed Ali as a successor to lead the Muslim community after his death. He was appointed caliph in 656 but lost control of the Islamic world, he was murdered soon after that. Aliââ¬â¢s sons Hassan and Hussein tried to recuperate their legitimate right to leadership but were not successful, and they were also murdered. Shia or ââ¬Å"party of Aliâ⬠believe that Ali and his descendants should be the leaders of the Islamic faith. Shia Muslims believe that there were divinely inspired figures called imams. Shias often worship the Imams as saints, ââ¬Å"an imam speaks with the authority of Godâ⬠. In contr ast, Sunni Muslims see imams as simply humans who lead the prayers of the community. Shias believe that there will be a messiah, they expect for this figure to appear on day and ââ¬Å"lead the world into an era of justiceâ⬠. They often do not trust the traditional readings and interpretation of the Qurââ¬â¢an by Sunnis, given that Ali is not mentioned as the successor of Mohammed. In conclusion, it is worth mentioning that despite the differences between the Sunni and the Shia Muslims, they share the main Islamic beliefs. They venerate the Prophet Mohammed, above everything else and regardless of their involvement in any particular group. They read the same Qurââ¬â¢an and follow the same Five Pillars of Islam. Most importantly, they accept each

Poverty And Hunger Hunger - 1542 Words
Anna Mayer Professor Terri Hardy Social Problems SOC S-163-Sect. 29531 08 April 2016 Poverty and Hunger Hunger impacts 48.1 million Americans; 46.7 million of them live in poverty. Poverty is the social factor, which creates and sustains hunger. You may be wondering that if poverty creates hunger, what creates poverty? Economics, politics, and capitalism all keep the impoverished from escaping lower class, and in turn, the inability to escape hunger. The elderly population is amongst the most impacted by hunger. Social isolation, and lack of family and peer emotional support affect food securement. Mental health, mobility, access to resources and transportation, and cost of medical expenses also attribute to in-securement. Physical impairments and dietary restrictions also influence ability to prepare and consume food. An Australian study from 2005 found that elders living alone reported increase food insecurity along with poor health, limited financial resources, and lack of home ownership (Woltil, 2012). 5.4 million seniors are going hungry due to lack of support, money, and special health needs (ââ¬Å"Hunger and Poverty Factsâ⬠, 2016). Family And Literacy Free Essays
As a child growing up, my parents had already shared to us different stories from mythical/folk tales to the tales of other family members. The typical childhood stories, i. e. We will write a custom essay sample on Family And Literacy or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. , were not also lost in the classroom arena as well. These stories were the first glimpses of the moral backbone that one adopts and also served as the first taste of reading and writing, the fundamental necessities in formal learning. Concerning the moral background, these stories had taught me the valuable lesson of integrity, empathy, sympathy, kindness, and the lesson that two wrong could not make a right, and elders should be respected. Telling and reading stories with a child could definitely give the child certain ideas. My mother rarely read me stories but I still developed a knack or liking for reading novels and poetry. The precious times that the stories were told had given me this certain enthusiasm. It has driven me to have a certain passion to learn how to read and write on my own and these were powerful backgrounds to help me in my formative years. Being a parent, an aspiring teacher and a former child, I could draw a conclusion that parents could help pave the way for children to easily adjust to formal schooling. Parents could further develop the basic learning abilities of children by encouraging their natural curiosity and imagination. A childââ¬â¢s learning usually starts at home with the parents and the development of these first steps could be furthered by the school. It was said that the child could learn with the help of the parents through constant exposure to Environmental Print (Jo Anne L. Vacca, 2005). The parents could do this by accessing what is readily available at home. They could make use of the television set. A parent then could sit down with the children and explain what could be seen. They could devise a plan where their children could do some activities concerning the television show like scribbling down some words that they had encountered while watching. This just a start and a glimpse to the help that parents could extend to their children. REFERENCE Jo Anne L. Vacca, R. T. V. , Mary K. Gove, Linda C. Burkey, Lisa A. Lenhart, Christine A. McKeon. U.s Human Rights Intervention Essay Example For Students
U.s Human Rights Intervention Essay Should the U.S. intervene to prevent or end violations of human rights (including genocide) in foreign countries when these violations do not directly affect other American interests? The United States is a growing global power and presence. Most other countries are not. We are often called upon to engage in conflict situations like preventing violations of human rights and genocide. Intervening only where our national interest is concerned would only bring about negative reactions, which could undermine our effectiveness and especially our international credibility. Therefore, the U.S. should seek to intervene in and prevent violations of human rights not only where we have other interests but in most other circumstances. S. had a duty to do just that. As we have emerged in this shadow of superiority in this present day and time, we have a duty to help whenever the need arises in weaker countries where genocide of violation of human rights is involved to preserve global peace. Also, the U.S. should intervene whether national interest are involved or not because this will continue to ensure that the U. S. plays a major role in shaping other countries foreign policy and remaining a key player in world politics. Editor and Author, Robert Kagan maintains in his book, American Power A guide for the perplexed that American national interests need to be interpreted broadly to take into account the countrys position as world leader. Intervening only where our interests are involved will make other countries suspicious in their dealings with the U.S. in most other aspects. If countries realize that the U.S. intervenes only when American national interest is involved, they might become hostile to U.S. advances because they might think the U.S. wants to gain something from them. In short, other countries would regard us as a selfish country, only concerned with human rights internally and concerned with where we can gain externally. Acting only where our national interest are concerned may open up opportunities for endless frivolous complaints to be lodged against the United States as a global power and presence. Lastly, if U.S. intervention in the prevention of human rights is based solely on other American interests, our world today will be a world of crisis, so to speak, because such crimes as genocide, crimes against humanity, violations of human rights and humanitarian law would be much more commonplace and no one would do or be able to do anything about it. An example is the kosovo situation that took place recently in Europe. President Milosevic of Yugoslavia was committing genocide and even the bigger countries of the European Union like Great Britain and France were looking up to the U.S. to help intervene. We have a duty to help fight these crimes, however we should be careful not to over-intervene in the internal affairs of sovereign states. We should only intervene as a last resort after much effort at other means (like indirect sanctions, embargoes, e. t.c). I believe it is right to send American soldiers into harms way when we do not have clear national interest at stake if we have to because, if we are to continue making the decisions we make in the world today, if we are to continue pulling the influence that we pull, then sacrifices will have to be made. .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 , .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .postImageUrl , .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 , .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:hover , .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:visited , .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:active { border:0!important; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:active , .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2 .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5b514730e3a9c2a50f5eec017fd1bcd2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Comparison Of Domestic Polocies Of Roosevelt, Taft EssayCategory: Social Issues .
